Of the hundred Kawaii characters, let me introduce you to the most famous ones.
You may want to know, what does the word “Kawaii” translate to? Allow me to give you an insight on the very definition of the word, and its importance as a cultural trend. And while we are on that note, let’s have a look at the 6 most famous Kawaii characters, who although are fictional characters, yet loved and adored by thousands of Kawaii-lovers all around the world.
To put it in a broader sense, Kawaii is used to describe the culture of celebrating all things adorable and embracing fictional characters as the embodiment of positivity. The concept of Kawaii originated as a distinct Japanese cultural trend, and soon evolved into a world-wide phenomenon, spreading through many aspects of life.
Okay! So let’s come back to the fun stuff now. I have been obsessed with the Kawaii-trend ever since I had been introduced to it. I love watching Kawaii movies, I love shopping for Kawaii plushies and other items and I also love eating Kawaii food. I spend most of my weekend binging “Bare Bears” (A series on the life of three bears- A panda, polar bear, a grizzly bear) on Netflix.
Gosh! I have talked quite a lot! So without further a due, let’s get right on talking about the 6 all-time favourite Kawaii characters-
1. Totoro: He is the title tetartagonist and forest spirit that lives on the largest camphor tree in a small village. He is a Studio Ghibli creation, and was featured in the films, ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ and ‘Mei and the Kittenbus’. All kinds of merchandise for Totoro; may it be a totoro plushie, totoro stationery, bottle, tiffin box, umbrella and a lot more is very popular all around the world.
2. Usa-Chan: Usa-Chan aka Ousi-Chan or Bun-Bun is Mitsukuni “Hunny” Haninozuka’s favourite rabbit plushie. Hunny was gifted the rabbit plushie by his deceased grandmother and he cares for it, as if it were alive by talking to it and taking him for his regular cake indulgences. Usa-Chan plushies became so popular that they are sold globally today.
3. Pikachu: Pikachu is an electric-type Pokemon, introduced in Generation I. Pikachu is famous for being the most well-known and recognizable Pokemon. The character, because of its popularity, serves as the Pokemon franchise mascot. What people adore about Pikachu is his appearance as a small, chubby, and incredibly cute mouse-like Pokemon, mostly covered in yellow fur and a large tail notable for being shaped like a lightning bolt.
4. Rilakkuma: Rilakkuma means ‘bear in relaxed mood’. Rilakkuma is infamous for being extremely lazy, stress-free and one who always burns the pancakes. Rilakkuma is impossible to be hated because of his cute appearance. Rilakkuma merchandise has become very famous globally. The character also has a Netflix series devoted to it.
5. Gudetama: Gudetama is Japan’s one of the most popular mascots and an anthropomorphic embodiment of severe depression. Gudetama is an egg-yolk, who believes that existence is almost unbearable. It shivers with sadness and clings to bacon as a security blanket. The character now appears on slippers, plush dolls and even on a themed credit card by Visa.
6. Hello Kitty: Hello Kitty was created in 1974 by Sanrio and is adorned by thousands for its small round-face, cartoon cat-like girl, with black eyes, yellow nose and a red bow perched on her left ear. Sanrio maintains that Hello Kitty is a girl and not a cat. Hello Kitty’s merchandise is valued at millions and it appears in almost all kinds of items.
